Inspired by the theme and composition of ‘bathers’ paintings, such as those of Cézanne and Derain, "Bathers" instead rejects the intrusion of the male viewer (or painter) upon private moments between women. The women often gaze challengingly at the viewer. Others lounge, finding pleasure by the water or with their company.
